A two-stage system spends most of its life on low, which means longer cycles, and longer cycles are what pull humidity out of a house. It is the tier where the comfort difference is easiest to feel for the smallest extra.

Is the jump from single-stage worth it?
For the way the house feels in August, usually. For the electricity bill on its own, the arithmetic is on the home page and it runs past eight summers.
Does it need a different thermostat?
It needs one that can call for both stages. That is included when we quote a two-stage system, and we say which model.
How much quieter is it?
On low, which is most of the time, noticeably. On high it is about the same as a single-stage.
